Ski slopes are located on both sides of the wide valley. To the ski area on Kl. Scheidegg/Mannlichen from Grindelwald can be reached by train (which takes 40 minutes) or by gondola, which takes slightly less time. Built more than a quarter of a century ago, the cable car with four-seater cabins is still, as they say, the longest road of its kind in the world.
On the opposite, southern side of the valley is the First ski area. 6-seater gondolas are lifted from below, and several four-chairs and yokes work at the top. The slopes of Mount First are very light, sunny, with pleasant relief.
Well-prepared trails of medium difficulty, their total length is about 50 km. Highest point - Oberjoch (2501); strong skiers should pay attention to the excellent off-piste slope going to the left. Sledding enthusiasts will enjoy a unique 15-kilometer track with Faulhorn (2681), which is considered the longest in the world. Quite peaceful and flat at the beginning, the track shows its treacherous character towards the finish when it comes time to descend a steep and often icy section. The resort, which can accommodate about 5,000 guests, is located in a sunny location at an altitude of 1,274 meters, and is transported to Wengen by train (no car traffic). The use of railways and funiculars as ski lifts in this region began more than a century ago. The first hotels here opened in the 19th century, when skiing was not yet practiced. Compared to Grindelwald, Wengen is a small, secluded village located on a slope. But don't worry about being cut off from the rest of the world: trains to Wengen run until night, so you can safely go to Interlaken or Grindelwald for dinner and fun.

One of the local attractions is the summit of Schithorn, where the revolving restaurant Piz Gloria is located. Its windows offer an impressive 360° panorama and views of more than 200 mountain peaks. The Schilthorn can only be reached by lift from Mürren, the third resort in the Jungfrau region. This is the smallest, but at the same time, certainly the most picturesque village in these places: snow-covered streets, cozy wooden houses, nestled on a high mountain ledge. You can only get to Mürren by gondola; there are simply no cars here. The first hotels in this amazing place appeared at the end of the 19th century, and this village is one of the places where skiing originated. The legendary Englishman Arnold Lunn created the British Kandagar Ski Club here, which later gave the name to the slopes of many resorts. In 1928, the first “hell race” - Inferno race - took place on the Kandagar track.

Grindelwald was first mentioned in 1146 as Grindelwalt. The oldest traces of settlements on this site date back to the Neolithic era. Several ancient Roman coins were also found. In the Middle Ages, a castle was built on the Burgbühl hill above Grindelwald. In 1146, King Conrad III donated his holdings in Grindelwald to the monastery.

At the end of the 12th century, the barons of the Alpine valleys, which later became the Bernese Oberland, became involved in a war due to the expansion of Duke Berthold V of Zähringen. The Duke defeated a coalition of nobles in the Grindelwald Valley in 1191. His victory allowed him to expand the city and found the city.

Grindelwald and Interlaken Abbey:

At the beginning of the 13th century, the Abbey of Interlaken began to purchase rights and lands in Grindelwald and eventually forced the local nobles to leave the area. And today, at the “Top of Europe” there is the highest railway station in Europe, from where excursions to the kingdom of eternal snow and ice begin.

Getting to Grindelwald:

You need to get to Grindelwald from Interlaken (Interlaken Ost station), which can be reached by train from. Without a transfer it will not be possible, since a slow cogwheel train departs for Grindelwald, up the mountain, and does not run on the usual rails of high-speed trains. World Snow Festival– in January, for a week, groups of artists from Switzerland and other countries carve sculptures from meter-long snow blocks, which are provided by the organizers (January).
Velogemel World Championship– Every year the Snowbiking World Championships take place in Grindelwald, making an ordinary alpine village unique (February).
Snowpenair– music festival, snow open air, always takes place at the end of the winter season on Kleine Schneidegg (March).
Landart Festival– short-lived works of art set against the backdrop of a natural landscape. Local natural materials are used (June).
Spring Mountain Festival– this celebration takes place annually in Mannlichen next to the Berghaus – with dancing in national costumes, folk music and flag throwing (June/July).
