In the future, it is planned to build a metro all the way to the airport, but now getting to Sabiha Gokcen is quite difficult and you need to make many transfers. The most convenient way is, of course, a taxi. This article discusses how to get from Ataturk Airport to both the European and Asian parts of Istanbul. The location of the airport on the city map can be seen below.

The airport has 2 terminals, Terminal 1 for domestic flights, Terminal 2 for international flights. The terminal diagram can be seen below.

The first thing you need to do after arriving is to remove Turkish lira at an ATM at the airport, because You can pay for transport and buy tickets only in local currency.

Municipal bus tickets are purchased as a token from a special machine called Jetonmatik or as an electronic ticket from a machine called Biletmatik. The cost of one trip by bus or metro is 5 Turkish lira one way.

Havatas Shuttle Bus from Sabiha Gokcen Airport to Istanbul City Center

The center of Istanbul can be reached by express bus Havataş company. These white buses await passengers near the exit from the arrivals area. The bus follows the route Sabiha Gökçen havalimanı – Taksim Square, Sabiha Gökçen airport – Kadıköy district. Travel time to Taksim Square is about 1.5 hours, depending on the intensity of city traffic. The bus runs every 30 minutes from 04:00 to 01:00.

The fare to Taksim Square is 15 Turkish lira (3.8 USD) one way, to Kadikoy - 10 Turkish lira (2.5 USD) one way. The express bus ticket is purchased directly from the driver.

City bus from Sabiha Gokcen Airport

Several city bus routes depart from the airport and will take you to the port or metro stations. Buses run from approximately 06:00 to 01:30. I post the bus numbers and their routes:

  • Bus E3: Istanbul Sabiha Gökçen International Airport - Levent Metro
  • Bus E9: Istanbul Sabiha Gökçen International Airport - Bostancı İskele
  • Bus E10: Istanbul Sabiha Gökçen International Airport – Kurtkoy – Kadikoy
  • Bus E11: Istanbul Sabiha Gökçen International Airport - Kadikoy
  • Bus 16S: Istanbul Sabiha Gökçen International Airport - Metrobus Uzuncayır
  • Bus 132H: Istanbul Sabiha Gökçen International Airport - Pendik YHT

Bus + metro from the airport

Since the Marmaray underwater tunnel is built under the Bosphorus Strait, you can get to the European part of Istanbul by bus + metro. First, take the KM-20 bus to the Kartal or Pendik metro station, where you change to the metro line M4 (pink line). Take the M4 to Ayrılık Çeşmesi station, where you change to Marmaray and get to Sirkeci Marmaray Metro Station. Sirkeci Station is located in the center of the European part of Istanbul, 300 meters from Topkapi Palace and 1 km from the Sultanahmet Mosque.

Ferry from Sabiha Gokcen Airport to Istanbul

If you have some time to spare, you can combine the route from Sabiha Gokcen Airport to the very center of Istanbul - Sultanahmet Square. First you need to land at the airport at municipal bus under the number E10 or E11 on the route Sabiha Gökçen havalimanı airport - Kadıköy district. At Kadıköy stop, take the ferry to Eminonu station, which departs every 30 minutes and costs 1.95 Turkish lira per person (0.5 USD), and then from Eminonu station take the tram to Sultanahmet Square or can be reached on foot.

The second option to get by ferry from Sabiha Gokcen Airport to the European part of Istanbul is bus 132H to Pendik YHT port + ferry.

Taxi from Sabiha Gokcen Airport in Istanbul

You need to be very careful with taxis in Istanbul; there are often cases of fraud, especially among female passengers. For example, a friend of mine had only dollars with her, the taxi driver said that he would take dollars without any problems, he took her to the center, took 100 dollars, did not give change and left. There are also frequent traffic jams in the city, and in order to earn more money, taxi drivers carry passengers through these traffic jams, the sums run up much more than $100!

To avoid getting into such a situation, I recommend that you take a taxi not on the spot to be on the safe side, but pre-order a taxi transfer to any hotel via the Internet from a Russian company. The driver will meet you with a sign and take you to your destination in comfort and in compliance with traffic rules. And you won’t have to overpay for luggage or for time stuck in traffic jams, since the driver knows how to quickly get to the city center, and the price will be fixed, which you will see on the website, without hidden fees. From Sabiha Gokcen Airport, a Russian taxi can take you to all areas of Istanbul, as well as to the nearest cities: Taksim Square in Istanbul, Sultanahmet, Fatih, Beyoglu, Kadikoy, Sile, Orta Mahalessi, to the ski resort of Bursa (Uludag) or even to Bulgaria in Burgas!

Merhaba, arkadaşlar!

I don’t know why, but I’m always a little nervous about an independent transfer from the airport to the city. That is why I always study this issue very carefully.

Today’s post will primarily be of interest to those who are going to Istanbul in the near future, but in any case there will be no dry presentation of material. I got to the hotel with a little adventure, which I’ll tell you about.

Important! In addition to the main transfer option, it is always better to keep a couple more in reserve. You never know what kind of force majeure awaits you. Of course, the easiest way is to order a taxi, but this is the most expensive of all the standard methods, although it is also the most comfortable.

After I, happy, with tickets in hand, went online to figure out the transfer, my enthusiasm dropped to zero. Well, judge for yourself, I’m reading a cheerful report from another traveler: “first you take such and such a bus, get to such and such a stop, transfer to the ferry, then from the ferry station you go to the tram stop and ride the tram to the station you need.” What?!
My plane arrives in Istanbul at 19.00, plus half an hour/hour for various airport hassles and money exchange. It's 20.00. It's getting dark at night. A girl with a suitcase, alone in an unfamiliar city, some ferries, trams. Fuck! The evening ceases to be languid.

Istanbul's districts are scattered on both sides of the Bosphorus. The most interesting, from a tourist point of view, is the Sultanahmet area. Here is the Blue Mosque, Hagia Sophia, Topkai Palace, Basilica Cistern and much more.

The map shows that Sabiha Airport (green circle) is much further from Sultanahmet (yellow) than Ataturk Airport (blue). But don’t be too upset, because Ataturk is closed for passenger traffic from March 1, 2019.

I somehow immediately decided for myself that, despite the difficulties with the transfer, I would not exchange Sultanahmet for any other district of Istanbul.

Passport control at Sabiha Gokcen airport was completed quite quickly. Russians do not need a visa to Turkey. They slapped a stamp on my passport and let me go in peace.
While I was waiting for my luggage, I decided to exchange some money. The rate is quite acceptable, but in the Grand Bazaar area it is still better).
The photo was taken in early March; today the lira exchange rate is much more pleasant - 12.28 rubles. And in general, due to the fall of the national currency, travel to Turkey has become very budget-friendly.

Transfer options from Sabiha Airport:

1. Taxi

The most convenient, fastest, but quite expensive way to transfer to the hotel. I was not interested in the cost of a taxi at Sabiha airport. Taxi drivers are on duty at the gate exit, but we know that their prices are always inflated))

The international KiwiTaxi service quotes prices starting from 2,700 rubles (depending on the exchange rate). Provided that there are 3-4 travelers and taking into account the distance of the trip, it is quite possible to order a taxi.

A child seat will cost 300 rubles. Additional services are indicated when booking. The driver will meet you at the airport with a sign, so you won’t have to run around looking for a car.

You can also look for private transfers on Getyourguide, but I didn’t find anything cheap there from Sabiha Airport. Maybe they'll come to their senses during the season))

2. Minibus or shuttle

Cost about 15 euros. It is better to order the shuttle in advance; it runs once an hour. See point 1. Sometimes a taxi is cheaper or comparable to the cost of the shuttle.

If you want to think through everything while still at home, I recommend using the services of the international transfer company intui.travel. A trip from Sabiha Airport to the Sultanahmet area will cost 1,279 rubles. Don't forget to indicate the current date, number of passengers and pieces of luggage. If desired, you can request the cost of transfer to the hotel.

3. Adventure trip: bus + ferry/metro

My route ideally should have looked like this: I take a bus from the airport to the pier Kadikoy, there I load onto the ferry, make a romantic night crossing to the pier Eminonu, I walk to the hotel, check in and breathe out.

What was the reality?

From Sabiha Airport you can get to the city by Havatas buses or regular city express trains. The difference is in price and speed of movement. On the official website of the airport, Havatas is called a shuttle.

Both have a stop located directly opposite the airport building. I saw the Khavatash bus immediately and rushed to it as if it were family. There are signs on the buses indicating the end point of the route. Watch carefully, Havatash can take you to the square Taksim. From there you can also get to Sultanahmet, but why do you need such an adventure? Look for the sign Kadikoy.

Another plus is that Havatash buses have a luggage compartment. The fare costs 10 liras to Kadikoy and 15 liras to Taksim, you can pay directly on the bus. The first part of the quest has been completed. I relaxed a little, started looking around and found city routes right behind my bus. E10 And E11, which will also easily take you to the Kadikoy pier, but for 4 liras.

You can view the public bus schedule. Here it’s up to you to decide - cheaper, but longer, or more expensive, but faster.

The journey from the airport to the Kadikoy pier took approximately 40 minutes. The bus drove up almost to the pier.
During the journey, I managed to meet a girl and a guy from Voronezh, who came to Istanbul for 2 weeks (!). By a remarkable coincidence, they also needed to go to Sultanahmet. The guys, like me, came to Istanbul for the first time, so we decided to stick together. Russians don't give up!

We found the required pier quite quickly, but it turned out that the nearest ferry would only be there in half an hour.

To be honest, I was looking forward to the ferry ride and was ready to wait. However, the only man in our newly formed company suggested getting to the Sultanahmet area by metro. The young man knew for sure that there was a metro line under the strait. I didn’t prepare for trips on the Istanbul metro in advance, but based on some vague impressions from the reports I read, I remembered that the metro lines in Istanbul do not intersect. That is, you can’t, like in Moscow, pay once for travel and ride all day. Each separate branch is a separate payment.

This is where I had to give up traveling together... Well…. the man said. We quickly figured out the token machine (a machine that sells tokens) in the metro. We navigated the map, waited for the train, arrived at the desired station and... oops. Indeed, you can’t just move from branch to branch. Please pay another 5 liras. In Istanbul, travel on any type of transport costs 5 liras if you do not have an Istanbul card.

I decided to refrain from saying “I told you so!”)). In any case, we got to the desired point on the route, only a little more expensive and crooked. At the metro station Sirkesi We parted, wished each other a great trip and went our separate ways.

I’m right next to the Eminonu pier, so as not to change to the tram, but the guys preferred to live in the center of the historical part of Sultanahmet.
Conclusion: bus + ferry is the most optimal route.

What is the best way to get from Sultanahmet to Sabiha Airport?

It’s strange, but almost all guides to Istanbul advised booking a transfer to return to the airport.

Of course, nothing prevents you from repeating the route exactly the opposite, but in fact, it’s really easier to order a transfer. The service is offered by almost all travel agencies and hotels. Please note the departure time. Istanbul has a serious problem with traffic jams, so it is better to allow plenty of time for the road. I didn’t bother with ferries and buses and simply booked a transfer at one of the travel agencies. Cost 30 liras or 10 euros.

A minibus will pick you up directly from your hotel. Be prepared for the fact that the transfer is a group transfer and you will be stopping at other hotels for tourists. Travel time is 1-1.5 hours.

This concludes my “technical” post :). Next time I promise to tell you about Istanbul itself, and not beat around the bush.

Despite all the hassles of getting myself to the hotel, I still managed to get a little feel for the city. Eyes snatched unusual faces and clothes from the crowd, Turkish speech was heard everywhere, ferries plied along the strait, and there was a smell of roasted chestnuts. These were my first associations with Istanbul.

Oksana was with you.

Sabiha Gokcen Istanbul

Why was Istanbul's second airport named Sabiha Gokcen? This name was not chosen in vain. Sabiha Gokcen was the world's first woman to become a military combat pilot. She was also one of the first female pilots in Turkey. She was born in 1913 in the city of Bursa in the Ottoman Empire and died at the age of 88 in 2001 in Ankara in the modern Republic of Turkey. The story of this brave woman is amazing and instructive, as it was filled with various dramatic events in which she had to take part during the formative years of the young republic. But this article is not about her, but about the international airport in Istanbul, named Sabiha Gokcen in her honor.

How to get to Sabiha and how to get from Sabiha to the center of Istanbul

In order to get to Sabiha Gokcen Airport from the center of Istanbul (European side), you need to use either public transport in Istanbul, since it is quite developed, or use transfer or taxi services. You do the same thing, but exactly the opposite, to get from Sabiha Gokcen to Sultanahmet, Beyoglu and so on.

Let's look at them in order:

  1. We get there on our own. For example, you are in the European part of Istanbul in the Beyoglu or Sultanahmet areas (the most common tourist areas). If you are in Beyoğlu (Taksim Square area), then you simply take the Havataş bus and travel on it to Sabiha Airport for about 1.5 - 2 hours. If you are in Sultanahmet, then you either go to Taksim Square on Tram T1 to the Kabatash stop and take the funicular and repeat the journey on the Havatas bus, or you need to get to the Asian side, for this you take any ferry to Kadikoy and already there take the Havatas and get there in 30-60 minutes to Sabiha Gokcen airport. You can also use Marmaray. In general, it is important to remember that there are 2 Havatash points - in Taksim and Kadikoy + there is also municipal transport (as an alternative) with a large number of variations in which you can get confused. Therefore - Taksim and Kadikoy + Khavatash. The frequency of movement of Havatash varies from time to time, on average about 20-30 minutes. For more details, please visit the official website of Havataş http://www.havatas.com/
  2. We take a taxi. Everything is simple here. Catch a taxi, say Sabiha Gokcen and go, make sure the meter is on. My article ““ will help you find out the estimated cost of the trip.
  3. We use it. Typically, many hotels offer their clients transfers from and to Sabiha Gokcen Airport in Istanbul. Here you just need to calculate what will be cheaper for you - a taxi or a transfer. In terms of comfort and time, it is approximately the same. Find out the cost of the transfer at the hotel + don’t forget about reasonable bargaining, and estimate the cost of the taxi in advance using the method specified in point No. 2.

Important! Sometimes hotels offer a promotion: “Take 5 (for example) or more nights at our hotel and get a free transfer to the airport.” It is important to understand here that most likely this will be a transfer to Ataturk Airport. Check!

Pre-ordering a transfer with a meeting at the airport building with a sign and a Russian-speaking accompanying driver is often much cheaper. The average cost of a trip from the terminal exit by taxi to the center costs approximately $50-60.

Ferry

How to get to Istanbul from Sabiha Gokcen in the most memorable way? To do this, you should take bus E10 or E11 to the stop “Kadikoy Marina”, from which there is a real passenger ferry. The cost of a boat trip is about two Turkish lira (about 1/2 dollar).

The ferry departs regularly at intervals of 30-50 minutes. Such a trip is the longest in time, but it allows you to enjoy wonderful sea views and immerse yourself in the atmosphere of the East.

Sabiha Gökçen havalimanı Airport is located 35 kilometers from the historical center, on the Asian side of Istanbul. Ataturk Airport is considered the main one in Istanbul; the main passenger flow passes through it, and Sabiha Gokcen Airport was built in addition to it when Ataturk Airport could no longer cope with the number of passengers.

For those who prefer to fly with low-cost companies, saving money on air tickets, it is useful to know that many low-cost airlines fly to Sabiha Gokcen Airport, such as Air Arabia, Flydubai, Norwegian Air Shuttle, Wizz Air, Germanwings, and for the Turkish low-cost airline Pegasus Airlines the airport is the main base.

From Sabiha Gokcen Airport to the center of Istanbul you can use the following types of public transport:

By Havatas bus

Comfortable Havataş express buses operate between Sabiha Gokcen Airport and Taksim and Kadikoy areas. This is the easiest and most understandable way to get to the city center. The bus stop is located at the exit from the arrivals area near the “HAVAS” sign. The ticket is purchased from the driver.

Airport (Sabiha Gökçen havalimanı) - Taksim

The fare is 15 liras. Travel time is about 1.5 hours. They work from 4:00 am to 1 am. The schedule to Taksim can be checked on the carrier’s website using the link.

Airport (Sabiha Gökçen havalimanı) - Kadıköy district

The fare is 10 liras. Travel time is about 1 hour. They work from 4:00 am to 1 am. The schedule to Kadikoy can be checked on the carrier’s website using the link.

Alternatively, at the Kadıköy stop you can take a ferry to Eminonu station, which departs every 30 minutes and costs 1.95 liras and, having reached Eminonu station, take a tram to Sultanahmet Square or walk.

Metrobus

Metrobus is an inexpensive and fast option to get to the city center. These buses run along a dedicated road lane, stop only at rare stops, and the fare depends on the distance of the trip.

The metrobus itself does not go directly to Sabiha Airport. To get on this bus you need to take the E10 or E11 bus at the airport and get to the Uzuncayir stop. Cross the road using the underground passage, which will take you directly to the metrobus stop.

Another option for getting to the metrobuses: at the airport, take the KM22 bus, get to the Kartal station, then change to the Kartal – Kadikoy metro station (pink line M4). Take the metro to Unalan station, get off there and there will be a Uzuncayir metrobus stop.

To avoid getting confused by the names, look at the Istanbul metro map. You can find the train map and schedule on the official website of the Istanbul metro.

Metro Marmaray

« Marmaray"(Marmaray) is an underwater railway tunnel under the Bosphorus Strait. From Sabiha you take the KM22 bus and go to the Kartal metro station, then take the metro itself to the Ayrilikcesme station. There you change to Marmaray and with its help you can get to Sirkeci railway station (located next to Eminonu pier). There are Marmaray stops everywhere.

Traveling by this type of metro will save you quite a lot of time (since it does not depend on traffic jams). You can pay for travel with a token or IstanbulKart.

Fare

The fare is 5 Turkish lira (2017). Cheaper trips 2.60 lira - when using IstanbulCard. If you plan to move around the city a lot, the IstanbulCard will allow you to travel on all types of public transport, except taxis and Havatash buses. Those. used to pay for the metro, trams, city buses, sea buses and funiculars. Electronic travel passes must be applied to the reading devices when entering the transport, and the money for the trip will be debited from the account. You can familiarize yourself with other types of tariffs.

Where to buy tokens and travel cards

You must purchase a token at the entrance to pay the fare. Tokens are purchased from machines called " Jetonmatik».
IstanbulCard can be purchased at the airport. It should be taken into account that the machine that sells IstanbulCard only accepts paper bills for payment. When purchasing a card, a security deposit of 6 liras is charged. You can replenish it in the same machines, in kiosks where they sell newspapers or tobacco, in stores - wherever there is an “IstanbulKart” designation.

By metro (planned opening in 2019)

In 2019, it is planned to launch a metro to Sabiha Airport. For this purpose, the pink metro line M4 Kartal - Kadikoy will be extended, which in turn is integrated with the Marmaray metro line.

From Sabiha Gokcen Airport to Ataturk Airport

If you need to get to another Istanbul airport - Ataturk, then in Taksim you need to transfer to a bus from the same Havataş company. The second part of the journey to Ataturk will take about 40 minutes. The total cost of such a trip will be 27 liras.

By taxi

The official city taxi of Istanbul can be recognized very easily - these are yellow cars with a logo and the inscription “taxi”. The line of taxis ready to take you away is located after leaving the arrivals area.
Taxi is paid strictly according to the meter, there are no additional fees for landing or the number of people, just as there is no fixed fictitious tariff to the airport. However, if you are stuck in a traffic jam, the meter will still spin and you will be forced to pay for the delay. Also, night and day rates were recently abolished. You can calculate the approximate cost of travel on this website.
Make sure that the taximeter is reset to zero when boarding.

Order a transfer

You can also use a transfer to get from the airport to your desired location in Istanbul. We recommend using the services of the international car transfer booking service Kiwi Taxi. The driver will meet you right at the airport with a sign, take you to the car and drive you without stopping.

By rented car

Using a rented car, you can get from the airport to Istanbul along the coast and the D-100 international highway.
