What percentage does Russian Railways charge for returning a ticket? How to get money back for an unused train ticket

The following rules and regulations for the return of Russian Railways tickets have been established:

  • You can return either one travel document or an entire order placed for one trip at one fare;
  • compensation is issued by RZD employees only for the traveler who issued the travel, or from a third party, by proxy;
  • If you have received a boarding coupon and completed registration, then you can issue a refund only through the ticket office of the railway station;
  • The amount of monetary loss when submitting the document depends on how long before the train departure the Russian Railways tickets are returned.

Conditions of the procedure

The cost of a travel document consists of two values:

  • payment for the use of Russian Railways infrastructure;
  • payment for a “reserved seat”, or the operation of a carriage and personnel services.

If the passenger cancels the trip, he will have to compensate the Russian Railways company for a fee of 193 rubles in any situation.

In addition, the following conditions apply when issuing a refund:

  • if the refusal occurs 8 or more hours before the departure of the train from the station where the traveler must board the carriage, then 100% of the cost of the reserved seat and the price for using the infrastructure will be compensated;
  • when returning the coupon within a time period of 8-2 hours before the train departs, the passenger is compensated for 100% of the use of the railway structure and half the price of a reserved seat;
  • if the compensation is issued less than 2 hours before the departure of the train or 12 hours after the departure of the train, then the failed passenger receives only 100% of the price of the infrastructure, without compensation for the reserved seat;
  • if a citizen had compelling circumstances that forced him to hand over a travel document (accident, sudden illness, death of a loved one), then the money can be returned within five days from the date of the events, receiving only 100% compensation for the use of Russian Railways infrastructure.

You will not be able to return a right-of-way ticket under the following circumstances:

  • when trying to cancel one of two seats booked in a business or luxury class carriage of an international train;
  • when trying to cancel one of several seats purchased at the same fare on a train traveling on the Finland-Russia route;
  • if you miss the deadlines provided for by the rules of the organization.

How to return a train ticket at the box office and on the website?

So, your trip is canceled for some reason, and now you are faced with the question of how to get your money back for a Russian Railways e-ticket. To get a refund, just like with a regular ticket, you need to return it. You can return your ticket on the Russian Railways website or at the Russian Railways return office. In the second case, you need to have with you the document on the basis of which the ticket was purchased (passport, for example), and a 14-digit electronic ticket number.

If you bought an electronic ticket and decided to print it on a regular form, this is your right, but if you do this earlier than 1 hour before the train departs, your electronic reservation will be canceled. You can return a printed ticket only at the return desk.

A ticket can be returned in two ways:

  1. As usual. This is acceptable if:
  • electronic registration for your train is missing or has not been completed;
  • you have checked in, but there is more than 1 hour left before the train departs;
  • you checked in, but the train left without you.
  • In a claim manner. It is possible in the following cases:
    • if you are late for the train by 12 hours or more;
    • if you are late for the train for up to 5 days from the moment the train departs for a valid reason, such as illness (but in this case you will need to present a corresponding certificate);
    • if the electronic ticket was returned less than 1 hour before the train departure;
    • if you decide to return a ticket that was issued by bank transfer.

    If you decide to use the claim procedure, you will need to submit:

    • a statement from the person in whose name the ticket was purchased;
    • copy of passport;
    • original ticket (if it is not electronic);
    • supporting document in original;
    • a certificate confirming the reason for your lateness;
    • indication of the method of refund.

    Refunds can now be made by mail (you will be charged all necessary taxes and fees) or by transfer to a bank account or bank card (for this you must provide all bank and account details)).

    The passenger has the right to file a claim for a refund of the ticket within 6 months from the date of departure of the train. The decision to return funds is usually made within 1 month, after which the citizen is notified of the decision.

The procedure in this case will be the same as when returning on the official Russian Railways website. To cancel a purchase on this service, you just need to click on the “Returns and Exchanges” link and follow the instructions.

    What to do if a paper counterpart has already been received

    In this case, it will no longer be possible to return the travel document directly online. You will have to figure out how to return an electronic ticket to Russian Railways at the ticket office. This is actually also not difficult to do, but the return procedure will take much more time. When you arrive at the station, you will need to show the cashier your passport and the electronic order code from the letter. When returning a ticket to the box office, the money for it will also be returned to the bank account from which the purchase was made.

    How to cancel electronic train registration

    Thus, we have found out how to return an electronic Russian Railways ticket at the ticket office and via the Internet. Now let's see what to do if you have to cancel your registration. Passengers who have booked a trip in this way should cancel it no later than one hour before the train departs. To complete the cancellation, you will need to follow the link in the letter that arrives in the mail after purchasing your seat. You can do the cancellation a little differently. To do this, you must issue a ticket at the ticket office or terminal. In this case, electronic registration will be canceled automatically. Then the ticket is simply handed over to the ticket office as usual.

    Ticket return fees

    So, we found out how to return an e-ticket for Russian Railways. The money will be returned to you, albeit not immediately. However, if you cancel your trip, among other things, you should be prepared for the fact that the amount received will be several hundred rubles less than the amount paid. Firstly, you will be charged a claim fee from Russian Railways (about 100 rubles). Secondly, you will have to pay for the return procedure (around 180 rubles). Of course, you will also be charged a commission by the payment system or bank you used when making the purchase. If the ticket was issued on the website of a Russian Railways partner company, you will also have to pay a commission fee for using the service. Russian Railways will also withhold an amount of 90 rubles for online returns.

    Deducting the cost of a reserved seat

    In some cases, the amount lost upon return may be greater. The passenger is additionally charged:

    • 50% of the cost of a reserved seat (if returned 8-2 hours before the train departs);
    • 100% if the ticket is returned less than two hours before departure.

    The cost of the reserved seat itself can range from 30 to 80% of the price of the travel document. If the client contacts the ticket office 12 hours after the train departs from the boarding point, the amount for the unused ticket will not be refunded.

    Things to know

    If you were unable to get into the carriage due to illness or something that happened to you, you can try to return your ticket 12 hours after the departure of the train. However, in this case you will have to present the relevant supporting documents to the cashier (within five days).

    The cost of service services must be returned to the passenger who returned the ticket in full (including the cost of bed linen) regardless of the time of contacting the ticket office. The insurance fee is also paid in full.

    Return procedure when contacting the cashier

    You now know how to return an e-ticket for Russian Railways. You can get your money back within about a month after canceling your purchase. However, sometimes you have to wait longer for their translation. If you contact the ticket office three hours after the train leaves the boarding point, the procedure for returning money will be slightly different. After contacting the cashier, you will be given a receipt confirming the cancellation of the transaction. It will need to be sent by mail to the Russian Railways company, attaching a pre-written claim. In this case, the money will come within a maximum of six months.

    So, we hope that we have answered the question of how to return a Russian Railways electronic ticket on the website or at the box office in sufficient detail. This procedure, as you can see, is not particularly troublesome. The only inconvenience is that the money is not returned to the bank account immediately.

    Passengers prefer to purchase train tickets in advance, since in this case they have the opportunity to choose seats in comfortable carriages and the optimal travel route with a minimum of transfers.

    Sometimes such carefully selected tickets have to be surrendered. Life circumstances change, due to which the trip is postponed to another date or completely canceled. To save money, try to return your unnecessary tickets as early as possible.

    Things to remember when returning tickets:

    • You can cancel your tickets by contacting any Russian Railways ticket office;
    • Refunds in cash are allowed only upon presentation of a passport;
    • If you lose your tickets, go to the ticket offices at the stations, specially designed to resolve such issues. Please contact us there if your tickets are damaged;
    • when returning tickets purchased from agencies or intermediary organizations, commission fees and payment for their services are not refundable to the passenger;
    • For each ticket returned, you will have to pay a commission fee (with the exception of free tickets for children under five years old without a separate seat).

    The passenger should be aware that if he cancels the trip, the cost of previously purchased tickets for Russian Railways trains traveling through Russia will not be returned to him in full. If before the train leaves:

    • If he has 2 to 8 hours left, he loses half the cost of his reserved seat. The remaining amounts are refunded in full;
    • less than 2 hours remain - the refund amount is reduced by the entire cost of the reserved seat.

    The payment procedure is slightly different when returning tickets to the CIS and Baltic countries or for trains formed there. The passenger does not receive:

    • half the price of a reserved seat when tickets are returned from 6 to 24 hours before the train departs;
    • the cost of a reserved seat if you cancel your tickets from 3 to 6 hours before the train departs.

    If a passenger has lost a ticket, there is no talk of returning it at all. Usually, all issues related to receiving money due for returned tickets are resolved at the place of purchase. The same applies to passenger complaints. Address them to the Russian Railways branches at the place where you purchased your tickets.

    Rules for returning train tickets

    Check out the main important points that will help you understand the situation if you have to cancel your train trip:

    • The amount of the amount to be refunded if you cancel your trip depends entirely on the time of return of the tickets. If you want to receive full money for your tickets, return them more than 8 hours before the train departs. The only amount that will be withheld is a fee of 192 rubles 70 kopecks. You will lose a little more than half the cost of the ticket if you return the ticket and there are at least two hours left before the train departs. If you are behind the train, do not rush to throw away tickets for the departing train. Hand them in to the ticket office within 12 hours after the train departs. Then you will get back almost half of the money you spent;
    • As for tickets to the CIS and Baltic countries, it is better to return them two days before the scheduled departure day of the train. You will return the entire cost of tickets minus only the general fee. If there are still 6 hours before the train leaves, you can count on an amount of 60 to 70 percent. Returning tickets within just an hour guarantees you will receive 40 to 50 percent of the cost. If the train departs in less than an hour, there is no point in returning the ticket to the ticket office: the money is non-refundable;
    • The situation is more complicated with tickets to foreign countries: canceling them six hours before the train departs ensures that you receive the full amount. The established fee for returning tickets on these routes is 10 euros;
    • If the ticket was purchased with cash, then return the ticket at the box office. When purchasing a ticket online, funds will be transferred to the card used to pay for the tickets. It is impossible to know the exact date of receipt of money. Only time limits are set from 7 to 30 days. It all depends on the bank whose card owner you are. If there is a delay in receiving money, contact your bank;
    • Where and how to return an electronic ticket largely depends on whether electronic registration has taken place. If it is not available, you should cancel your ticket via the Internet. If registration has taken place, you can return your ticket online at least an hour before the train departs from the first station of the train route. Then you will have to take it to the cashier. If in doubt, information about completing electronic registration can be found on the website. Or see if there is an inscription on the boarding pass instructing you to get your ticket at the ticket office or through the terminal. It is made in red letters and immediately attracts the attention of passengers. If there is such an inscription, then this indicates the absence of electronic registration. If you have a printed ticket on paper, it will only be accepted at the ticket office;
    • In cases of being late for the train, it is possible to return the ticket only to the ticket office. It is not possible to do this via the Internet. If you missed the train, the ticket cannot be returned online - only at the ticket office. When registering electronically, hand over your ticket to the ticket office 20 minutes later, but no more than 3 hours after the train departs. Registration of its delivery will take place as usual. The money will be credited to the card within 7-30 days. Returning a ticket with registration at other times is possible only through a claim procedure. The wait time for passengers to pay is considerable. It is 180 days. Tickets without electronic registration for trains traveling through Russia are issued as usual;
    • If a passenger has a valid reason for being behind the train, the deadline for returning their tickets will be extended. Return tickets for trains in Russia no later than 5 days after the departure of the train; for the Baltic and CIS countries - no later than 10 days. Illness, accident or traffic accident involving a passenger are considered valid. Moreover, all these grounds must be documented. The refund amount will be from 40 to 50 percent. It will arrive on the passenger’s card within 180 days. For passengers who had tickets to non-CIS countries, a 30-day period has been established for applying for the return of tickets. If this deadline is met, he will receive all the money he spent, with the exception of a withheld fee of 10 euros. In addition, official documents should be submitted to justify the reason why the trip did not take place: a certificate from a medical institution, a traffic police report;
    • When checking in a ticket, you will need the passports for which the tickets were issued, the tickets themselves on paper, boarding passes or electronic ticket numbers;
    • As a general rule, a ticket is accepted only from the person in whose name it is issued. If for some reason you cannot return the tickets in person, issue a power of attorney to your principal from a notary to perform these actions. In this case, on the basis of his passport and the passport of the passenger who bought the ticket, a power of attorney, he will be able to hand it over to the ticket office instead of you;
    • Issuing a ticket requires correct indication of the passenger's last name, first name and patronymic, as well as his passport details. Do not worry if there is one wrong letter in your name or number in your passport number on your ticket. The conductor is obliged to allow such a passenger onto the train based on the existing ticket. If there are many more errors, approach the conductor in advance. He is authorized to issue a new travel ticket at a special terminal. But the passenger will have to pay 200 rubles. There is no need to contact the cashier. The cashier will not be able to make such corrections. Currently, tickets reflect the passenger's place and date of birth. This information is not the main one. Errors regarding place of birth do not matter. An incorrect date of birth will affect the situation if it affects the cost of the ticket. For example, as a result of an incorrectly indicated date of birth, a ticket for an adult is issued at a reduced child fare or vice versa;
    • You can only exchange a ticket for another time, train or place at the ticket office. This service is not available online. The operation of exchanging a ticket for a passenger creates a number of inconveniences.

    One of them: funds for the exchanged ticket will also be credited to the client’s card within a month. The passenger is issued a new ticket from the available available seats.

    The passenger gains slightly in the amount of the withheld fee: upon exchange it will be about 130 rubles, saving about 60 rubles. When traveling within the Russian Federation, exchange electronic tickets at least 8 hours in advance. In this case, a fine of 30 percent of the entire ticket price will not be withheld.

    What percentage of the cost of a railway ticket can be refunded?

    The sooner the ticket is handed over to the Russian Railways ticket office or via the Internet, the less amount will be withheld from the passenger.

    The amount that a passenger pays when purchasing a train ticket consists of two main parts: the cost of the ticket itself, which gives the right to travel by rail, and the price of a reserved seat (the cost of a passenger seat, depending on the degree of comfort of the carriage). Minor amounts include commission fees, insurance, and services. If the ticket was purchased not at the Russian Railways ticket office, but through other agencies, then the passenger also pays for their services.

    The calculation of the amount to be returned to the passenger when he returns the ticket depends on the time remaining before the train departs:

    • at least 8 hours - the money is returned in full minus the railway tax;
    • from 2 to 8 hours - the entire cost of the ticket and half of the reserved seat;
    • less than 2 hours - the client receives only the cost of the ticket without a reserved seat.

    If Russian Railways refuses to return the cost of tickets and all deadlines for receipt of money have expired, file a claim in court.
