How to get to Strasbourg easier and cheaper. Entertainment and attractions in Strasbourg

Greetings, my dears! Today we will talk about how to get from Strasbourg airport to the city center using all existing methods.

Strasbourg-Anzheim Airport is located 11 kilometers southwest of the city, in the Alsatian town of Anzheim.

Transport links between this airport and nearby cities are quite convenient, and you can get to the capital of European justice in several ways and at any time of the day.

In this article:

The fastest way night and day

The most convenient way to get from Strasbourg airport to the city is by taxi. And if you arrived at night - the only one.

Taxi ranks are located in close proximity to the passenger terminal of the airport. To get there you need to go across the pedestrian bridge.

Do not trust unlicensed carriers! A trip with them can end in trouble and will never be cheaper than an official taxi.

The cost of a trip to Strasbourg is 20-25 euros during the daytime. At night the cost will increase by 10-15%. The best thing order a taxi online, then you will be met right at the airport and taken to your desired location.

Travel time is 15-20 minutes. Please be aware that there is often traffic congestion on this route.

By public transport

1. Train

A very convenient way for budget travelers. Aeroexpress "Navette train" runs between the airport and Strasbourg train station.

Its movement interval is 15 minutes, travel time is 10 minutes. The fare is 4 euros.

Aeroexpress runs:

  • on weekdays – 05.30 – 22.30,
  • on weekends and holidays - 07.00 - 22.00.

Tickets can be purchased at automatic ticket offices directly on the platform, as well as at any airport ticket office.

You can take the train at the station Entzheim - Airport (la gare d "Entzheim-Aéroport), which is located next to the passenger terminal of the airport. TER trains on the Alsace line depart from there.

You can get to the station from the airport terminal through pedestrian bridge.

2. Bus

Buses at Strasbourg airport are unpopular transport. The only route that goes through the airport is No. 12 ( Entzheim airportOuestLingolsheimAlouettes).

The interval of its movement is 15 minutes.

Working hours:

  • weekdays 5.15 – 20.40,
  • Sunday and holidays 9.45 - 19.40.

Tickets can be purchased at automatic ticket offices at the bus stop. The stop is located near the taxi ranks, behind the pedestrian bridge.

IMPORTANT! Ticket terminals do not accept paper bills or bank cards without chips. At the box office you can pay in any way.

By car

Many travelers prefer maximum independence. For them, the ideal solution would be to rent a car.

There are a lot of positive aspects:

  • no need to depend on public transport schedules,
  • no need to make transfers and wait at stations,
  • there is no crowd around,
  • You can carry any oversized luggage,
  • amenities for people with limited mobility and the elderly,
  • fewer problems when traveling with a child,
  • you can take your pet with you,

  • at the end of the trip it is very convenient to return by car to the airport,
  • rent and gasoline will cost you approximately the cost of numerous train and bus tickets,
  • you plan the rhythm and schedule of the trip yourself,
  • you can visit many places remote from public transport routes.

You can rent a car directly at the airport terminal, immediately upon arrival. In the arrivals sector there are several counters - agency offices.

But they don't operate 24 hours a day, so if you're planning an overnight flight to Strasbourg, you might want to think about getting a car in advance.

Preliminary booking agreements with Strasbourg rental companies can be made on that website. Be sure to print out the contract. This will need to be shown to the agent upon arrival.

Another advantage of pre-booking is that the car will be delivered to the airport at a time convenient for you. The transaction is completed on the spot and quite quickly.

You can rent a car if you:

  • over 21 years old,
  • have a driving experience of at least 3 years,
  • your driver's license is international.

Please pay attention to the expiration date of your rights. If they need to be changed in a month or less, they may not give you a car.

This is due to the internal instructions of some companies, and it is useless to argue. It's better to insure yourself in advance.

You can get to Strasbourg from the airport by car via highways D 221, A35.

Strasbourg (France) - the most detailed information about the city with photos. The main attractions of Strasbourg with descriptions, guides and maps.

City of Strasbourg (France)

Strasbourg is a city in Eastern France, the capital of Alsace and the prefecture of the Bas-Rhin department. It is an ideal stopover between France and Germany, amazingly combining the medieval past and the modern present. Strasbourg has an incredible Gothic cathedral, narrow streets and half-timbered houses of the Grand Ile, canals and amazing cuisine. In addition, the city is the parliamentary capital of Europe (the European Parliament meets here) and one of the largest university centers in France.

Strasbourg is one of the most beautiful cities in the east of France, which looks as if it came straight out of the pages of fairy tales or fantasy. Its true pearl is the old town - Grand Ile. Interestingly, the historical center of Strasbourg was one of the first (among all other European cities) to be included in the list of UNESCO World Heritage Sites.

Geography and climate

Strasbourg is located in eastern France on the banks of the Ille River (west bank of the Rhine) near the German border, between the Vosges and the Black Forest. The city lies on the plains of Alsace and occupies a favorable central position in Western Europe. At the same time, historically and geographically Strasbourg is closer to Germany, which leaves some German imprint on it.

The climate is temperate continental with warm summers and fairly cool winters. Despite the fact that the average winter temperature is generally positive, frost and snowfall are often possible. Due to its location between two mountain ranges, Strasbourg is not exposed to strong winds.

Practical information

  1. Population - 277.3 thousand inhabitants.
  2. Area - 78.3 square km.
  3. The official language is French. Although in Alsace there is a special dialect that belongs to the South Germanic group of languages.
  4. Currency - euro.
  5. Visa - Schengen.
  6. Time - Central European UTC +1, summer +2.
  7. On the first Saturday of the month, admission to all museums is free.
  8. Strasbourg is quite popular among tourists thanks to its beautiful pedestrianized city center, which can be easily explored on foot. Some areas, especially those close to the cathedral, attract large tourist groups. Especially in summer and during the Christmas holidays. It is best to explore them outside of peak hours - in the evening or early morning.

Best time to visit

Strasbourg can be visited all year round. But the best time to visit is the warm season and the pre-Christmas period.

Story

The name "Strasbourg" can be translated as "fortress (castle) by the road." Already in the 3rd century BC there was a Celtic settlement on this site. During the time of the Roman Empire, there was one of its border cities - Argentorat.

After the collapse of the Roman Empire, the city was occupied by the Germanic tribe of the Alemanni, who in turn were absorbed by the Franks. The name Strasbourg originated in the early Middle Ages. After the collapse of the Frankish kingdom, Alsace became part of the Holy Roman Empire. Strasbourg remained part of Germany until the 17th century, even after gaining the status of a free imperial city in the 13th century.

In 1349, Strasbourg witnessed some of the bloodiest events of the Middle Ages, when more than a thousand Jews were publicly burned in its squares. The persecution of the Jewish population here continued until the 18th century. Strasbourg was one of the first Protestant cities in Germany to adopt the Lutheran faith at the beginning of the 16th century. Because of this, it became one of the European centers of humanistic learning and printing. The first newspaper in Europe was published in Strasbourg.

In 1681, Louis XIV took advantage of the chaos of the Thirty Years' War and annexed the Alsace capital to France. Strasbourg's status as a free city ended after the French Revolution. After the Franco-German War of 1870, the Germans re-annexed the city and implemented a policy of Germanization leading to the expulsion of those who chose to remain French. After Germany's defeat in World War I, the city returned to France. And now it is the turn of the French to try to eradicate traces of Germanization. During World War II, the Nazis considered Alsatians as compatriots. Therefore, many of them were forced to fight in the German army.

Today Strasbourg is one of the ten largest cities in France and is one of the centers of French learning and European politics.

How to get there

Strasbourg has its own international airport. But there is one caveat - the number of destinations is quite limited and they are all quite expensive. The best choice would be Basel Airport. From Basel airport you can take a bus to Saint-Louis train station, then take a train to Strasbourg. Some budget low-cost airlines fly to Karlsruhe Airport. The best way to get from there to Strasbourg is to take bus 285 to Baden-Baden train station (3.40 euros, travel time about 25 minutes), then by train.

Strasbourg has access to motorways connecting it to the west (A4), south (A35) and east (A5). Keep in mind that in France most motorways are toll roads. By motorway, Strasbourg can be easily and quickly reached from: Paris, Lyon, Basel, Frankfurt, Brussels,.

Strasbourg has high-speed rail connections with Paris and some other cities: Lyon, Dijon, Metz, Marseillais, Bordeaux, Lille, Frankfurt, etc. The railway station is located in the western part of the city.

Shopping and purchases

There is a flea market on the rue de Vieil-Hôpital on Wednesday and Saturday. North of the city center is Place Des Halles, a shopping center with more than 100 shops. In 2008, a new shopping center was opened in Strasbourg - Rivetoile, located between the Etoile Polygone and Etoile Bourse tram stops. Designer clothes can be bought at Galeries Lafayettes, Rue Hellebardes and Place Gutenberg.

Food and drink

Alsace is one of the most famous gastronomic regions of France. There is an abundance of exquisite, high-quality products. Foie gras and sauerkraut are the two centers of Alsatian cuisine. Popular dishes include baeckeoffe (stewed pork or beef), tarte flambée (similar to pizza) and spaetzle (various pastas), which are a side dish for fish and poultry. For dessert in Alsace they serve various pies and the famous kugel schopf. Local wines are very popular and famous.

Attractions

Grande Ile is the heart of Strasbourg, it is a large island formed by the Ile River. This is the ideal place to explore the city and its historical atmosphere. The Grande Ile is actually the historical center of Strasbourg. Here are its main attractions: Strasbourg Cathedral (Notre-Dame de Strasbourg), other medieval churches and historical buildings.

Strasbourg Cathedral (Notre Dame de Strasbourg) is one of the most grandiose Gothic churches in Europe and a wonderful monument of medieval architecture. The great Victor Hugo spoke about him - “a gigantic and delicate monster.” The cathedral was built between 1176 and 1439 and has a 142-meter tower (completed in 1439), the tallest in France. To climb to the observation deck you need to overcome 322 steps. The cathedral has a 300-year-old astronomical clock. Entrance to Strasbourg Cathedral is free.

Every day at 12:30 the astronomical clock chimes with a small performance from the life of Christ and the parade of the apostles. From the outside, the facade is a gigantic picture of the Middle Ages: hundreds of sculptures stand out from the walls and emphasize the play of light and shadow. And the pink sandstone from which Notre Dame is made changes color depending on the time of day.

Church of St. Thomas is a Protestant church, a masterpiece of Alsace Gothic art. It is one of the few Protestant churches that have survived from the Reformation period. Inside is the mausoleum of Marshal Sax - a Baroque masterpiece.

Church of St. St. Paul's is a beautiful neo-Gothic building from the late 19th century. This Protestant church is located on the edge of Ile Sainte-Hélène.

Saint-Pierre-le-June is a Protestant church built in the Gothic style on the site of an ancient chapel from the 11th century from the Merovingian period. This former monastery church retains some Romanesque elements and frescoes from the 14th century.

Place Gutenberg is a square a few steps from Notre-Dame de Strasbourg. Named after the inventor of printing, Johan Gutenberg. His monument is erected on the square. This place was one of the centers of Strasbourg from the Middle Ages to the 18th century.

Kleber is the main public square of Strasbourg. This is the venue for various events and fairs; the main Christmas tree of the city is installed here.

The Rohan Palace is a historical monument in Grande Ile, which now houses 3 museums: an archaeological museum and a museum of fine and decorative arts. It was built between 1731 and 1742. The Rohan Palace is considered a masterpiece of the French Baroque.

The Kammerzell House is one of the most beautiful houses in Strasbourg. This typical Alsatian half-timbered house with a beautiful carved facade was built in the 15th century and is located in the historical center of the city.

"Little France" is one of the most beautiful places in Strasbourg, a historical district (island) with beautiful half-timbered houses near the water. Craftsmen, fishermen and millers lived here in the Middle Ages. Is a pedestrian area.

Not far from Petite France are the "covered bridges" (Les Ponts Couverts), which have retained their name despite no longer having a roof. The bridges were built to serve as ramparts for fortifications on waterways. They were used to connect three medieval towers, remains of ancient ramparts and covered wooden galleries, which have now disappeared.

The Vauban Dam is a barrier dam designed by the famous French marshal and military engineer Vauban. The dam was built to protect Strasbourg when, after the evolution of artillery and warfare technology, the walls were no longer a reliable defense. The dam made it possible, by closing its arches, to quickly raise the level of the Il River. If you go up to the roof you can admire the labyrinth of Strasbourg canals and Petite France.

Place Broglie is more like a long alley. There are several fine 18th-century mansions here, as well as the town hall, prefecture and opera house.

When the question of my business trip to Strasbourg arose, I had to study all possible flight options to this city, and I found the most budget option, which I present to you.

1.Flight to Strasbourg

Strasbourg airport is very small and flights there are not as regular as we would like. One of the less expensive ways is to fly with a transfer in Amsterdam, or in Paris to Strasbourg Airport. If you want to get to Strasbourg by plane, then you will definitely have to make at least one transfer from Moscow. However, this is an excellent option for those who want to walk around Amsterdam or Paris, or who have one or two days left for sightseeing in these wonderful cities.

If the gap between planes is significant, the ticket price is reduced.

2. Airplane to Frankfurt + Lufthansa Express

Perhaps one of the cheapest options to get to Strasbourg is to fly to Frankfurt on a Lufthansa airline, and then transfer to the Lufthansa express directly to the city of Strasbourg. The road from Moscow to Frankfurt am Main takes about 3 hours 50 minutes, plus you will spend about 3 hours on the road in a bus (don’t worry, the bus is very comfortable). The convenience is that the Lufthansa Express departs directly from Frankfurt am Main airport.

You will only have to find the bus terminal. The cost of a ticket from Moscow to Strasbourg for February 2019 ranges from 9,000 to 15,000 rubles. Depending on the seat on the plane and the selected boarding option with or without luggage. Lufthansa Express is also convenient because if the Lufthansa flight to Frankfurt is delayed, you will definitely be transferred to another bus. You can purchase tickets for both express and plane tickets at once on the official website of the Lufthansa company. I got there exactly this way. But the most difficult thing in this matter is the time gap between the express and the plane. Both in one direction and in the other direction. On the way there I had a break of about 3 hours, thanks to which I was able to have a wonderful lunch at the culinary store located at the bus station, and also get my luggage safely. On the way back, my time gap was very short - about an hour and a half. Nevertheless, thanks to checking in for the flight in advance, this time was enough for me to go all the way from the bus station to directly boarding the plane, taking into account the long queues at security and customs control in Germany.

3.Plane to Paris + train

You can also get to Strasbourg by plane to Paris with a transfer directly at the airport to a train to the city. If you suddenly want to stay for a few days in Paris, you can transfer to the same train express train at one of the railway stations in Paris. The cost of this option as of February 2019 ranged from 12,000 to 17,000 rubles, depending on the seat on the plane and the shape of the luggage. Unfortunately, the Paris railway station is in no way connected with the airline Air France, which provides transportation, so if your flight is delayed, no one will compensate you for the cost of train travel. Be careful with time intervals.

4. Pobeda airline plane to Baden-Baden plus bus to Strasbourg

If the purpose of your trip includes visiting the baths of Baden-Baden, or you have extra time and are not in a hurry to get to Strasbourg on a clearly defined date, then you can choose a budget flight option using a Pobeda flight to Baden-Baden, and then transfer at the bus station Flixbus bus costs about 5 euros. This method is not convenient because you cannot transfer to the bus very quickly, because the bus runs two or three times a day, and taking into account the time it takes to collect luggage at the airport, check-in, and the way to the bus station, you may lose precious time and not make it in time on the bus. You can also use the German railway DBach. You can buy tickets there in advance for 19 euros if you buy in first class, or buy directly at the station - from 40 or more.

I hope my note will help you in choosing the most optimal route and budget option for your flight. Agree, it’s great to save money so that you can spend it later in the city on something that will truly bring you pleasure.

Transport in the city

Like many other European cities with a rich history, the center of Strasbourg is almost entirely pedestrian. The distances here are short, and walking on foot is not only interesting, but also not at all tiring. The city center can be fully explored inside and out in a couple of days.

Strasbourg is one of the most bike-friendly cities in Europe. There are plenty of bike paths and plenty of bike rental shops. Popular and convenient locations include rental shops in the city center on rue des Bouchers and directly opposite the train station on rue du Maire Kuss. Free maps of cycling routes are available from tourism offices. Rental cost is about 7 EUR per weekday and 10 EUR on weekends; A deposit of 100 EUR is required. Prices on the page are for October 2018.

You can also comfortably move around Strasbourg using public transport: buses and trams of the state company CTS, the main transport hub is Place de l’Homme de Fer. There are about 40 bus routes, 6 tram routes: from A to F. There is a unified ticket system; They can be purchased from newsagents, tobacconists, tourist offices, CTS sales points and from vending machines at tram stops. The ticket will need to be validated at special terminals at stops or from the driver when entering the bus. The fare starts from 1.80 EUR, you can also purchase a 24-hour ticket - 4.50 EUR.

If you decide to rent a car, you should remember that it is better not to drive it into the city center: in addition to the fact that most of the streets here are pedestrian, on roads open to vehicles, there is usually very heavy traffic with frequent traffic jams. For cases when it is necessary to travel by car and you want to visit the historical center of Strasbourg, a parking-relais system is provided: the car is parked in one of eight parking lots located near the tram lines. With the receipt you receive, you can take the tram to the city center and return to your car for free.

Cuisine of Strasbourg

French dishes with a German flavor, German dishes with a French touch - this is how Strasbourg cuisine can be briefly described. It is worth trying onion pie and foie gras, rabbit marinated in wine, and baeckeoffe - a potato dish with three types of meat: lamb, pork and beef. And of course, wash down all this splendor with wonderful Alsatian wines, beer or schnapps.

Entertainment and attractions in Strasbourg

The undisputed masterpieces of the historical center, a must-see, include Strasbourg Cathedral, an amazing monument of 15th-century Gothic architecture that was the tallest Christian church in the world for four centuries. There are many medieval sculptures outside and stained glass windows inside. The highlight of the cathedral is the astronomical clock, which releases a string of apostles from its depths every day at 12:30. (At 12:00 a film about the history of creation and the clock mechanism is shown in the cathedral.)

The Kammerzell House is an excellent example of 16th century half-timbered architecture: diagonal timber beams filled with bricks and adobe. In addition to admiring the facade, you can have lunch here in a small restaurant.

“Little France” is the most picturesque quarter of Strasbourg with miniature houses built among the canals, as it seems, on the very surface of the water. The famous covered bridges (Les Ponts Couverts) of the 13th century are also located here, which once protected the city from invasions from the other side of the Ile River.

The best view of the covered bridges is from the nearby panoramic terrace of the Vauban Dam. Admission is free, opening hours are from 9:00 to 19:30.

The Protestant Church of Saint-Thomas is an example of Gothic Alsatian architecture. In the choir of the church there is the tomb of Marshal de Sax: funeral pomp of the Baroque 18th century. with many curls, weighty vignettes and figures of boundless sorrow.
